Direct To Card Printers (Good) print directly onto the card and their supplies are a bit less expensive. However, since the printhead touches the surface of the card they are always subject to damage. Replacement printheads are $699 to $799 and usually need to be replaced every year or two. However, with proper use of the cleaning kit and certified Fargo cards, the printhead will last longer. Jewelry and watches are also a common source of damage when the user is changing out a ribbon, cleaning the machine or retreiving a card from a cardjam.

High Definition Printers (Best) print indirectly onto the card to a transfer film with the color ribbon so the printhead never comes in contact with the card's surface. High Definition printing produces a much better quality print with over-the-edge printing and crisp high definition resolution. Another advantage of this technology is that the printheads have a limited lifetime warranty. No need to buy the $699 to $799 replacement printhead every year or two as you must with the direct to card printers.
